Season 3 Arena equipment change stops ratings abuse
December 12, 2007
WoW
Today's maintenance is over, but the Season 3 Arena gear drama has only just begun, or ended depending on your point of view. Late last night, Tyren posted that when the servers came back up there is a new change to purchasing S3 Arena equipment. Before the maintenance, a certain Personal Rating was needed to buy the S3 gear, but now the same gear requires the purchaser's Team Rating to be in the same range.
According to Jagoex at Warlock Therapy, this was done to stop a practice of artificially inflating your Personal Rating. Our own Zach Yonzon explained this smurfing concept. Players would form teams with their main and alts, winning with their mains and losing with their alts, thus ensuring a slow and steady Personal Rating gain. Now that the equivalent Team Rating is required, those people working the system have to play the Arenas the way Blizzard intended.
Tyren also mentioned that though the new purchasing requirements are in effect as of today, they won't be displayed by the in-game vendors yet, but in an "upcoming patch." So though you won't see it listed in-game, the Team Rating is now required.

Forced Name Changes for Some Players
October 05, 2007
WoW
Rather then deal with them on a case-by-case basis via GM intervention,
Blizzard has decided to handle the oddball names with funky characters in them
via software. Thundgot had the following to say on the subject: We wanted to
inform players whose character names contain letters from the Cyrillic alphabet
that they will receive an automatic forced name change upon the release of
patch 2.2.2. Allowing the input of Cyrillic characters in names was the result
of an accidental code change. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may
cause. Cyrillic characters will still be usable in the in-game chat, however.
Patch 2.2.2 is hitting the European servers as we speak. It is unclear at this
time if the forced name changes will only be enforced in Europe or if the
policy will eventually bleed over onto the North American servers.
Gold Sellers Adapt to Changing Mail System
September 23, 2007
WoW
Insider posted a link to an interesting Se7en Samurai blog that was published
on Wednesday talking about new methods gold sellers are using to deliver gold.
A little while ago, Blizzard changed the mail system to provided immediate
delivery between characters on your own account. Also the transfer of gold
between accounts, which previously was immediate, now takes one hour. The extra
one hour provides enough time for Blizzard's anti-transaction system to scan
and hopefully remove the "tainted" gold. Now gold sellers are moving towards a
slightly more complex buying system through selling small worthless items for
sizable lump sums on the Auction House.
